Mos Def: The Ecstatic (Colored Vinyl) Vinyl 2LP
āThe way I feel sometimes its too hard to sit still / things are so passionate, times are so realāĀ - canāt think of a more important time to repress this record than right now.Ā Mos DefĀ sets himself apart from the rest of the post-RawkusĀ set by constantly tearing up the rulebook and thinking outside of the box, tapping into blues rock on 2004āsĀ The New DangerĀ and usingĀ Juvenileās āNolia Clapā as a vehicle forĀ a spine-tingling indictment of the Bush Administration on 2006āsĀ True Magic. For his fourth (and at time of writing, most recent) solo full-length, Mos reaches into the underground and scoops up cultĀ Stones ThrowĀ beatsmithsĀ Madlib,Ā Oh NoĀ andĀ Georgia Anne Muldrow. In 2017, this sort of cross-pollination is commonplace, but in 2009,Ā MosĀ was a movie star, and him tappingĀ MadlibĀ for beats was a huge deal (seven whole years before āLib had a credit on aĀ KanyeĀ record).Ā The Neptunesā contribution (āTwilite Speedball,ā rumored to be a rareĀ Chad HugoĀ solo production) sounds right at home next toĀ Madlibās beats for āAuditoriumā (feat.Ā Slick Rick) and āWahid,ā two of the albumās toughest records. Other highlights include āPretty Dancer,ā āCasa Beyā and theĀ Dilla-produced āHistoryā featuringĀ Black StarĀ homieĀ Talib Kweli.Ā MosĀ leaps from raw spit to neo-soul croon (āRosesā) and bodega serenade (āNo Hay Nada Masā) as effortlessly as the man on the sleeve leaps between two buildings (a still fromĀ Charles Burnettās 1978 filmĀ Killer of Sheep). With original copies going for up to $400 (yes, really), this double vinyl repress is paramount (āand it's very necessary, get it clearlyā). 2018 clear colored vinyl pressing. Recommended.
